NUMBER SYSTEMS
THE HISTORY OF THE NUMBER SYSTEMS.
The history of the number system is a very fascinating journey that spans thousands of years and involves various cultures and civilizations. Here is a brief overview:
1). Ancient Number Systems.
The earliest known number system date back to ancient civilization such as Sumerians, Egyptians and Babylonians.
- The Sumerians used base 60 system, which influenced the way we measure time (60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour).
- The Egyptians developed a hieroglyphic system for representing numbers.
- The Babylonians used a base-60 system for mathematical calculations, which included the use of a place holder (zero) and positional notation.
2). Indian Number System
The Indian civilization made significant contributions to the development of mathematics, particularly with the invention of the decimal system. The Indian mathematician Brahmagupta introduced the concept of zero as a place holder and developed rules for the arithmetic operations with zero.
The Indian decimal system spread to the Arab world through trade and scholarship. Arabic mathematicians such as Al-Khwarizmi and Al-Kindi further developed the decimal system and introduced it to Europe
4). Adoption in Europe
The adoption of Arabic numerals in Europe played a crucial role in the development of modern mathematics. Fibonacci, an Italian mathematician, popularized the use of Arabic numerals in his book "Liber Abaci", which introduced European mathematics to the decimal system and positional notation.
5). Modern Number System
Today, the decimal system is the most widely used number system worldwide. It serves the foundation for arithmetic, algebra, calculus and many other branches of mathematics. The decimals system's simplicity, efficiency and compatibility with positional notation make it indispensable in various fields, including science technology, finance and everyday life.
